According to Mind, one in four people suffer from a mental health problem yet many do not get the help they need. So, with the mental health crisis recently hitting home for one of Richard’s close friends, he and his team have taken matters into their own hands to raise funds that will go towards providing more people with the resources they need. And having already raised over £40,000 collectively, the charity group has made incredible progress towards achieving that goal.
“We’ve all had that bad day when the overwhelming feeling of panic, pain and anguish consumes us - like life has gone down a rabbit hole and you don’t know where to turn or how to get out of it,” explained Richard. “Anyone that suffers or has suffered from a mental health condition will know that progress takes time and it’s not a simple process – but there are people out there who can help you cope!
“This challenge is our opportunity to show support for the incredible work Mind does on a daily basis. I’m immensely proud to be representing such an incredible cause and campaign. The Three Peaks challenge kicks off a series of fundraising activities that’ll be taking place over the coming months but the support we collectively have for the charity is ongoing.”
As the owner of local cleaning business, Poppies, Richard has long been enlightening people to the holistic benefits that cleaning and decluttering homes have on their wellbeing – including his own. The presenter of Filthy House SOS as well as running his own children’s club called The Cleaning Club, he has seen the hugely positive impact instilling soft life skills such as cleaning have on people’s social skills and wellbeing, regardless of their age. Having met representatives of Mind at a cleaning exhibition he attended last year, Richard decided now was the perfect time to reach out and help those suffering.
“There’s a quote that I like to live by: “the things you own start to own you.” And when you clean and truly commit to decluttering, it’s amazing how much pressure it can lift from your shoulders. I’ve seen how much people benefit from cleaning and decluttering thanks to my business and TV show, but this next step in my support for mental health awareness is rewarding unlike anything I’ve ever done. I can’t wait to take part in such a huge challenge followed by several other events. Letting go, decluttering and reconnecting with nature are brilliant ways of improving wellbeing, so having the chance to raise money for an incredible charity while scaling the Three peaks Challenge is something I’ll always cherish,” added Richard.

Poppies has helped me develop new skills that I never had before. But the thing about Poppies is that you are making a difference to people’s lives – it seemed to me there was very little chance I could fail with the support I would have. I’m here over 10 years later, so I obviously made a good decision.Rob Piper, Poppies Liverpool
The fact that you’re coming into a franchise means you’ve got the support there already from the network. We’ve gone through foot and mouth, recessions, COVID, and we’re still going, protecting our staff and lifestyle. It’s a very robust model. North.Andrew Wishart, Poppies
It was a big learning curve, but it was good because with Poppies there is always support there for you. You just have to call somebody and they will tell you how they dealt with the same situation. That support mechanism and backup is really handy and really useful.Nicola Marinan, Poppies Durham
