While a background in biological science and manufacturing may not be the typical precursor to starting a business based on the clothes we wear, Adam Cleary was trained to see things that aren’t immediately obvious to most.
Adam, the newest franchisee of quality bespoke garment business, Suit the City, says his career-long focus on rigorous attention to detail is a perfect fit for his new venture.
"I was scientifically trained, so when you put your eye to something you’re proficient at being observant – detail matters. You also never accept second best. It’s the same with suits, being analytical helps an awful lot because you just want the best for the customer."
Those skills have already come to the fore during pre-launch training for his new business.
"Since starting, and looking with a new critical eye, I now see so many people wearing clothes that could fit them better. I also know that there’s no such thing as 'normal', we’re all different shapes and sizes and what suits one doesn’t suit all!"
After a varied career that took him into biochemical and then food manufacturing, Adam was ready to stop working for others and start earning his own rewards.
"I wanted to do something for myself and move away from the corporate, controlled environment. I thought that starting up on my own was too risky – you look at the numbers of successful start-ups that are still going after three years and it’s a very small number indeed. With a franchise the basic model’s there and the groundwork’s already been done.
I looked at many different franchises, researching a lot of opportunities over many months. I’d always felt my best, at my most confident, when I’ve looked my best, so Suit the City appealed immediately. Then I saw the products and they were fantastic. I’m not someone with a hard-nosed sales technique, that’s not my personality so I knew I had to believe in the product as well."
Adam says he’s already seeing the benefits of doing his research and being part of a strong franchise.
"Carol and Sallie [Suit the City’s directors] clearly know what they’re talking about, the technical knowledge and background expertise is phenomenal. The support has been great, there are written guides as well as practical training and that really helps with learning an entire new business."
Suit the City franchisees advise their clients on style and fit, with all clothes made centrally by specialist tailors. That means there’s plenty of networking to be done, another area where Adam’s feeling stronger thanks to the franchise model.
"I’m lining up some groups that Carol will be attending with me, to help me out on the networking side which I’m less used to, and is a fantastic support. I’ve already ordered some new suits and shirts, so I’ll be looking the part too."
No wonder Adam’s already put ambitious plans in place.
"My mission statement is that every bloke deserves to have one suit that really fits them. I want everyone to understand how much better they’ll feel by spending just a little more money than you would on the high street. You should get the suit you deserve!"
