A story of how franchises can work together to improve their service

To experience the world of the people they care for, blindfolded carers ventured onto the streets of Hereford as part of an Enabling training programme.
Teams of blindfolded care support workers from SureCare (Hereford) took to the streets to experience the difficulties encountered by the blind and partially sighted. Led and trained by Shelley Saxon Ba.Hons, LLM, PhD, owner of fellow company, SureCare (Bath& Mendips), the carers learned how to negotiate the everyday obstacles of a busy shop-fronted street.
Shelley is currently doing part-time doctoral studies in the experience of older people living with an acquired visual impairment at the University of Exeter, she said: “Enabling differs from care, where tasks are performed by a carer. An Enabler supports individuals and empowers them to achieve their personal goals, whether it’s walking to the Post Office or making lunch. We received a great response from shoppers with several people telling us about their personal experiences.”
Once back in their office in Aubrey Street, the carers once again donned their blindfolds to make sandwiches for their lunch. The ‘seeing’ carers were taught how to verbally guide the blindfolded to locate and differentiate between different foods. SureCare (Hereford) owner, Ron Turner commented: “We are very grateful to Shelley for passing on her expertise. We look forward to incorporating her enabling techniques into our range of services.”
