As part of a 2010 business development iniative, the ICON franchisee network in the UK & Ireland took part in a survey which yielded some great information about the characteristics of a successful business advisor.
“We make use of a number of sophisticated behavioural programmes to help our team of advisors stay at the top of their game” said UK Director Tony Golley. “We thought it would be interesting to understand more about the ‘raw DNA’ of our advisors – their interests and pastimes as well as the usual demographic data. Building this profile will help us target our recruitment more accurately and give prospects looking at the ICON opportunity another set of criteria to measure themselves”.
The results showed that the current network of advisors is overwhelmingly male and that age on joining ICON ranged from 31 to 61 years, the average being 49 years and 339 days. 71% of recruits came from the Service Sector (which produces 73% of UK GDP and 77% of employment, with 21% coming from previous posts in business /management consultancy. Immediately before joining ICON, 43% of advisors held a Functional Director role with a further 29% serving as Managing Director or CEO. In salary terms, 21% earned £100k plus with 71% earning £50-100k..
ICON advisors are great sports fans with football capturing the interest of 28% and golf 21% - and a further 8 sports ranging from archery to windsurfing taking up the time of others. Food & wine, DIY and travel lead the less competitive pursuits. For further relaxation, 28% read The Times, 28% The Financial Times, 28% Daily Telegraph and 21% The Sunday Times.
As to the ‘how’ people joined ICON, 43% came via franchise recruitment websites, 36% following a direct mailing from ICON and 29% through ‘events’ like Open Days and Exhibitions. The ‘why’ people joined ICON saw a majority stating that they “liked the ICON team of people”. Other key reasons were the continued support given to franchisees as well as the solid ‘systems’ in place and many advisors see the ICON model as an ideal way to grow a business beyond themselves.
Moving into 2013, ICON is looking to recruit franchisees in all areas of the UK and Ireland and a number of existing franchisees are looking to recruit advisors into their practices to cope with growing customer demand.
