“When you see the results and pride in a student’s eyes after they had almost given up on themselves brings tears to your eyes,” says Daphne Engelken, Tutor Doctor franchisee.
Tutor Doctor offers one-to-one, individually tailored, tutoring in the home, offering services to students of all ages seeking support in any subject.
“It’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done, other than having my exquisite daughter,” says Daphne and that’s saying a lot for someone who has already done so much with her busy young life. Daphne studied entrepreneurship, sales and marketing in college. She then worked in retail business development for several companies and receiving a number of awards in business management along the way.
“I’ve always developed strong successful businesses for others and knew it was now my turn,” says Daphne. Mother of a 13 year old, Daphne enjoys Tutor Doctor’s business model as it allows her to spend quality time with her family, while making a contribution to the education of other local youngsters.
The word “powerful” is a perfect way to describe Daphne’s business growth. “I have gone from being a ‘One Woman Band’,’ fourteen months ago, to having two people in administration and 30 tutors in my network. We are always recruiting and interviewing new tutors to keep our supply fresh and talented.”
Working from home, however, is not without its challenges. “The most difficult part is that my family doesn’t always respect that I’m working when I’m working.” Still, she says, “Building a reputation and brand in a small community has been exciting and rewarding.” Daphne’s advice to other mothers, thinking of starting a new career working from home is simple. “Do it! Embrace it! Have Fun!” she says enthusiastically.
