Bernadette Lloyd, Aspray franchisee offers her advice and experience about running a franchise business

22nd September 2008 - Aspray

Bernadette Lloyd, Aspray franchisee for the Southampton and Salisbury territory, describes her experience as an Aspray franchisee, and offers advice for other people thinking about starting a franchise.

Why did you choose franchising?

We chose franchising because of the structure and support that most franchises offer. In particular, we were drawn to the business models in place and felt that it was a less risky option to setting up in business on our own while still giving us the independence that we wanted.

Why did you choose an Aspray Franchise?

We initially focussed on two areas – property and health. We explored a number of franchises. We were looking for something where our income was not totally dependent on the amount of time that we had available and where we could “employ” others as necessary. We talked with a couple of franchises further after visiting various stands at an exhibition in London. We felt that Aspray gave us the flexibility we were looking for as well as the opportunity to diversify into different aspects of property – a great interest of ours.

How has your work/social life changed since joining Aspray?

I now have much more control over my day which means that I can take time out to ferry the kids around or go to their school play. I work the hours I choose and although I sometimes have to work in the evenings, it is my choice to do so. I believe I am much less stressed than I used to be although the work does not come without its own challenges!

Your thoughts for the future

We are looking to get to the position where the business will support both of us as currently only one of us doing Aspray work. We are still at the very early stages and although I am drawing a salary, I have not yet replaced my previous income. The insurance work is something that is required at all times and is not totally dependent on either the weather or the economic state of the country so I see a solid future ahead. I also think that the service we offer is not widely known or understood and is something that people have welcomed when they have had an insurance claim handled by us.

What would you recommend to others about franchising in general?

When considering a franchise, do as much research as you can. Talk to both the franchise and the franchisees. Make sure that your business case holds together even with a pessimistic outlook. Visit the offices and talk with the staff at head office. Try to pick a franchise that you have an interest in. Experience is not necessary but having some related skills to build on will certainly help. Also ensure that you have the support of your family in what you are doing.

What would you recommend to others considering an Aspray franchise?

Talk to James (MD) and David (Operations Manager) and visit the offices in Blackburn. Speak to several of the franchisees as they all have different backgrounds and different experiences of running the franchise. NB The support of the franchisee network is extremely important. Often you can feel isolated working on your own so it is really beneficial to know that others have probably experienced the same things as you and you can discuss how to tackle different opportunities.
